A New Adventure: Real Estate and Livability

I am excited to announce that I recently obtained my Florida real estate license and joined The Keyes Company’s Boynton Beach office.

This is a new professional direction for me, but it also feels like a natural extension of the work I have been doing throughout my career. As a teacher, disability rights advocate, community leader, and co-founder of Disability Independence Group, I have spent many years helping people understand complicated information, explore their options, and make decisions that are right for their lives.

Housing has always been closely connected to that work. Where we live can affect our independence, safety, relationships, access to the community, and overall quality of life. A home is much more than a building. It is where we create routines, welcome family and friends, and build the lives we want.

I have been thinking more about how our homes can support the way we want to live throughout our lives. This may include moving to a new community, finding a home that better fits our changing needs, planning for the future, or simply learning more about the many housing options available.

I am excited to bring together the different areas of my work that have meant so much to me. This includes my interest in voting and community participation, my work addressing the intersection of abuse and disability, and my continued commitment to the Wallet Card® Project and improving communication and safety between people with disabilities and law enforcement.

I have started organizing my ideas around four broad areas:

  • Home: Understanding housing options and thinking about what makes a home work for each person.
  • Safety: Sharing information and resources that can help people feel safer and more prepared.
  • Community: Finding ways for people to connect, participate, and feel included.
  • Purpose: Encouraging people to use their strengths, remain involved, and contribute in ways that are meaningful to them.

I am still exploring how these ideas will come together. What I do know is that livability is about much more than where we live. It is also about having choices, feeling safe, belonging to a community, and having opportunities to participate and contribute.

The phrase Thoughtful Living for Real Life captures what I hope to build. I believe people are the experts in their own lives and should have the information and support they need to understand their options and choose their own path.
