Celebrating Value and Talent (Benefits 26-10)

Employment Supports for People with Disabilities
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The 2026 theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” recognizes the skills, talents, and contributions people with disabilities bring to workplaces and communities.
For many people with disabilities, employment can bring important questions: Will working affect my benefits? Can I afford the assistance I need? What support is available to help me remain employed?
Two programs that may help are WIPA and JP PAS
WIPA (Work Incentives Planning and Assistance) provides benefits counseling to eligible people with disabilities who are working, considering work, or interested in increasing their earnings. WIPA counselors explain how employment and earnings may affect Social Security and other benefits, helping individuals make informed decisions about work. Think of WIPA as: “How will working affect my benefits?”
JP PAS (James Patrick Memorial Personal Attendant Services & Employment Assistance Program) may help eligible working adults with significant disabilities who need personal assistance with daily activities. The program provides a monthly reimbursement to help offset the cost of personal care assistance. Eligibility includes requiring assistance with at least two activities of daily living, being employed, and meeting other program requirements. Think of JP PAS as: “I am working, but I need personal assistance to remain employed.”
Employment is about more than a paycheck. It can provide independence, purpose, financial stability, and the opportunity to use our talents. Your disability does not erase your talent. Your work has value.
