Making Schools More Inclusive

By: Maya Choban*
School is important for everyone, including students with disabilities. Every student should have a chance to learn and feel welcome at school. It is important for students with disabilities to be included in the classroom and in school activities.
Students with disabilities can be included in many different ways. They can be included in books, lessons, and class activities. This can help students learn that everyone is different and has their own needs. It can also teach students to be kind and respectful to others.
Making schools easy to use is important. Some students may need ramps or elevators to move around the school. Other students may need extra time, special tools, or help with their schoolwork. These things can make it easier for students to take part in class and school activities. Students with disabilities may face different challenges at school. Each student may need different help.
It is important to represent disabilities in a positive way. Students with disabilities can learn, make friends, play sports, join clubs, and be an active part of school. Giving everyone these opportunities and experiences can help students feel like they belong. It can also help other students understand disabilities and treat everyone with respect
Teachers can help by including people with disabilities in books and lessons. They can also use different ways to teach so students can understand the work. Listening to students is another way teachers can learn what kind of help they may need.
Before learning about this topic, I did not think much about how important it is for students with disabilities to be included. Now I understand that feeling welcome at school can make a big difference. I think students should have the support they need to learn and be part of their school.
Disabilities in education are important because every student should feel welcome and respected. Schools should include students with disabilities and give them the help they need. Everyone should have a chance to learn, take part, and feel like they belong.
